A plastic surgery department has been established at Na Františku Hospital

Na Františku Hospital has opened a plastic surgery department, becoming the fourth hospital in Prague to perform plastic surgery procedures at a dedicated facility. A team of specialists led by renowned plastic surgeon Josef Kulhánek will focus on addressing the consequences of past illnesses and injuries, as well as performing cosmetic procedures at the request of patients.
Until now, Na Františku Hospital has only performed select plastic surgeries and minor procedures within its existing surgical department. However, a significant portion of the surgery patients are women with breast cancer, which is why the hospital needed to expand its surgical program to include more complex plastic surgery procedures—procedures that health insurance companies only cover at specialized plastic surgery centers. The hospital administration therefore decided to establish such a department.
“The focus of our newly established plastic surgery unit is a natural extension of our surgical oncology program, which is designed for patients with breast cancer. We treat approximately 400 such patients each year. Our plastic surgeons participate in the surgical removal of the tumor and the subsequent breast reconstruction. It is, of course, more comfortable for patients if both procedures can take place at the same medical facility,” explained David Erhart, director of Na Františku Hospital and head of the surgical department.
However, doctors at Na Františku Hospital also plan to perform a wide range of other plastic surgery procedures, including flap grafts for skin defects, surgery for pressure ulcers, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, and certain procedures for post-traumatic conditions. In addition to procedures that address specific medical conditions, they will continue to offer cosmetic surgery services, such as tummy tucks, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and facelifts.
According to Chief Physician Josef Kulhánek, the department does not aim to become the equivalent of large plastic surgery units at university hospitals. Instead, he sees an opportunity in the setting of a smaller city hospital, where patients can receive individualized care. “We offer an alternative for patients who want high-quality care but prefer a less anonymous environment with a high degree of personal attention. We can also offer lower prices than those typically found at private clinics to those interested in publicly funded cosmetic procedures,” added Kulhánek.
