Total Endoprostheses (TEP)

At the Orthopedic Department of Na Františku Hospital, we specialize in joint replacements (total endoprostheses) for the knee, hip, and shoulder joints. We are one of the few facilities in the Czech Republic to offer hip replacement surgery using a minimally invasive technique.
The current waiting time for total joint replacement at our clinic is 4–5 months from the patient’s first visit.

What types of capping do we perform?

Total joint replacements are implants used to replace damaged or worn-out joints, usually as a result of osteoarthritis or other degenerative joint diseases. This type of surgery, also known as joint replacement, involves removing the damaged part of the joint and replacing it with artificial components that mimic the function and structure of a natural joint. The goal of the procedure is to restore joint function, reduce pain, and improve the patient’s quality of life.

For slender patients, when appropriate, we perform total hip replacement using a minimally invasive approach. This is a modern surgical technique that allows us to replace a worn-out or damaged hip joint with an artificial prosthesis using smaller incisions and minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues. This surgical approach focuses on reducing postoperative pain, accelerating recovery, and improving overall functional outcomes. Although minimally invasive surgery offers many advantages, it is not suitable for all patients. The decision to use this technique depends on a number of factors, including the size and condition of the patient’s anatomy as well as their overall health. The doctor will always discuss the options and expectations associated with this surgery with the patient to ensure the best possible outcomes.

To treat femoral neck fractures, we use a procedure called osteosynthesis whenever possible. In this procedure, screws, plates, pins, or other metal implants are used to repair the fracture by stabilizing the broken bone segment and allowing it to heal properly. This method is often preferred for fractures that can be successfully treated with this fixation technique. However, if osteosynthesis is not suitable or possible—typically in cases where the femoral neck fracture is too complex, there is a high risk of nonunion, or the patient’s age or health condition precludes the use of osteosynthesis—we opt for the implantation of a total or partial endoprosthesis as an alternative.

Shoulder joint resurfacing is a type of orthopedic surgery that focuses on restoring the surface of the humeral head without the need for a complete replacement with an artificial prosthesis. This procedure is typically recommended for patients with shoulder osteoarthritis who have damage or wear and tear to the cartilage on the head of the humerus, but whose rest of the joint is relatively healthy. It is important to keep in mind that resurfacing may not be suitable for all patients. The suitability of this procedure depends on several factors, including the extent of joint damage, the patient’s age, activity level, and overall health. The decision on whether resurfacing is the best option is made by the doctor, who will weigh all the benefits and risks of this procedure for the specific patient.

As part of our joint replacement surgeries, we are also prepared to address a wide range of complications that may arise following hip and knee replacement, including the need to replace loosened implants or treat fractures in the vicinity of the implants. In all the surgeries we perform, we use modern, world-class implants that we carefully select based on the individual needs and medical indications of each patient to ensure compliance with the highest European standards.

Why Choose Us

In all the surgeries we perform, we use state-of-the-art implants of international quality, which we carefully select based on the individual needs and medical indications of each patient. The implants we use meet the highest European standards. Our team specializing in total joint replacements has extensive professional experience. Our doctors regularly undergo training at leading orthopedic clinics around the world and participate in professional conferences and workshops so that they can offer our patients the latest treatment methods. Thanks to their excellent results and extensive experience, our doctors are also sought after as specialists for leading sports teams and the Czech Republic’s national teams, including the men’s, women’s, and youth national basketball teams, as well as first-division soccer clubs.

Another major advantage of our orthopedic department is the relatively short waiting times for scheduled procedures. We are able to achieve this thanks to efficient workflow management, effective coordination among our teams, and close collaboration with other hospital departments, particularly radiology, anesthesiology, and physical therapy. Thanks to this integrated approach, patients can go through the entire process—from initial diagnosis to postoperative care—smoothly and without unnecessary delays, allowing them to return to their normal lives more quickly.

Follow-up rehabilitation care

Rehabilitation is usually necessary after surgery to help patients recover more quickly and maximize the function of their new joint. Rehabilitation includes physical therapy, exercises, and sometimes other procedures that help patients adapt to their new joint and learn to make the most of its functionality. We provide this follow-up rehabilitation care to our patients directly in our modern inpatient rehabilitation department as part of the comprehensive services offered by Na Františku Hospital.
