The Surgical Department of Nemocnice Na Františku provides comprehensive care for patients with relevant surgical diagnoses.
Acute Outpatient Services provide examination and treatment for urgent conditions (injuries, inflammatory diseases, abdominal pain, etc.).
Specialist Clinics focus on specialized treatment and indications for planned surgeries, particularly in the areas of colorectal surgery (including oncological surgery), abdominal surgery, breast tumor surgery, bariatric surgery, urology, and wound healing.
The Surgical Department includes two inpatient wards for hospitalized patients. In addition to standard rooms with private bathrooms and Wi-Fi access, six premium rooms are also available.
The primary focus of planned surgeries within the Surgical Department is general abdominal surgery, with a specialization in the following areas:
- Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) abdominal surgery - operations on the gallbladder, appendix, and adhesions in the abdominal cavity (approximately 500 procedures annually).
- Hernia surgery (herniology) - umbilical hernias, inguinal hernias, recurrent hernias, incisional hernias, giant hernias, hiatal hernias, parastomal hernias, etc. - we perform both minimally invasive and classical operations (approximately 500 operations annually).
- Mammary oncological surgery – operations for breast cancer and benign breast lumps (approximately 400 operations annually).
- Metabolic-bariatric surgery - laparoscopic operations for obesity, operations for obesity associated with metabolic syndrome – diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea syndrome, high levels of fats and cholesterol in the blood (approximately 150 operations annually).
- Surgery of the digestive tract (laparoscopic and classical).
- Operations on the stomach for peptic ulcer disease, for benign and malignant neoplasms (cancer, GIST, NET), and for hiatal hernia and reflux.
- Operations on the small intestine for non-specific intestinal inflammations (IBD), for adhesions, polyps, and diverticula.
- Operations on the large intestine for inflammations (IBD), diverticular disease, polyps, and colon and rectal cancer (colorectal carcinoma).
- Approximately 100 operations annually - laparoscopically (75%) and classically (25%).
- Proctology – hemorrhoids, rectovaginal prolapses, anal fissures, fistulas, and abscesses - approximately 300 operations annually, both classically and minimally invasively (using the Longo method).
- Healing of chronic and complicated wounds - diabetic foot syndrome, leg ulcers, decubitus ulcers, radiation ulcers, etc. - treated conservatively using moist wound healing methods and surgically using plastic-surgical procedures (approximately 50 operations annually).
- Urology - scrotal varices, hydroceles, phimosis, sterilizations for self-payers, early stages of bladder cancer, minimally invasive and classical operations for prostate enlargement, and kidney operations (approximately 100 operations annually).
In the aforementioned segments of elective care, the Department of Surgery is classified as a 'high-volume' facility, where, due to the concentration of procedures, statistically better quality outcomes are achieved with fewer complications.
Generally, operations are performed using both classical methods (incision) and minimally invasive techniques (laparoscopically), through small 5-12 mm punctures, depending on the diagnosis and the extent of the findings. Minimally invasive methods offer patients less pain, reduced surgical burden, and faster discharge with a shorter recovery period. However, they require more sophisticated equipment at the facility. Nevertheless, a minimally invasive operation is not always suitable for every patient. Information regarding the suitability of a minimally invasive or classical approach for a planned operation will be provided by a physician at the specialist clinic when scheduling the surgery, or by the head of the department.
One-Day Surgery
Some operations (e.g., operations for benign tumors, hernias, hemorrhoids, gallbladder, appendix) can be performed under a one-day surgery regimen (admission on the morning of the operation and discharge on the evening of the same day, or by the morning of the following day at the latest).
Standard Hospitalization
Conversely, for more complex and demanding operations requiring a longer hospital stay, monitored beds and 24-hour availability of an anesthesiology and resuscitation team are provided. The department has 8 beds in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit, where patients are placed after major surgical procedures.
This arrangement ensures safe and high-quality postoperative care, while maintaining the family-like atmosphere of both the department and the entire hospital, which is another strong asset of ours.
Operations are performed in two operating theaters, which have recently undergone complete reconstruction and modernization and are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including two new laparoscopic towers.
Appointment Waiting Time
Another advantage of our department is the flexible scheduling of admission dates for surgery, where the waiting time for an appointment does not exceed two to three weeks (depending on the diagnosis). Patients have the option to reserve a premium private room when scheduling their operation.
Expertise
Physicians in our department present their experience at professional conferences and publish articles in both specialized and popular periodicals. Our department also provides education and professional internships for medical students from faculties of medicine and for high school students specializing in healthcare.
Premium Rooms
The Surgical Department offers six premium rooms equipped with a television, refrigerator, kettle, and Wi-Fi access. Each room features a private bathroom (toilet and shower).
You may reserve a premium room directly when scheduling your surgery at the specialist clinic, or later by phone or email on weekdays between 8 AM and 2 PM, by contacting the department's secretariat.
However, we recommend discussing this option with your attending physician in advance.
The department reserves the right to change the occupancy of premium rooms or cancel reservations due to capacity limitations or other serious reasons.
