Surgical Department

The Surgical Department at Na Františku Hospital provides comprehensive care for patients with relevant surgical diagnoses.

The acute outpatient clinicprovides examination and treatment for urgent conditions (injuries, inflammatory diseases, abdominal pain, etc.).

Specialized clinicsfocus on specialized treatment and referrals for elective surgeries, particularly in the fields of colorectal surgery (including oncological surgery), abdominal surgery, breast cancer surgery, bariatric surgery, urology, and wound healing.

The surgical department includes two inpatientwards. In addition to standard rooms with private bathrooms and Wi-Fi access, there are also six deluxe rooms available.

The main focus of the surgical department’s planned procedures is general abdominal surgery, with an emphasis on the following areas (subspecialties):

  • Minimally invasive (laparoscopic) abdominal surgery —surgery on the gallbladder, appendix, and abdominal adhesions (approximately 500 procedures per year)
  • Hernia surgery (herniology) – umbilical hernias, inguinal hernias, recurrent hernias, incisional hernias, giant hernias, hiatal hernias, parastomal hernias, etc. – we perform both minimally invasive and open surgeries (approximately 500 surgeries per year)
  • Breast oncology surgery – surgery for breast cancer and benign breast lumps (approximately 400 surgeries per year)
  • Metabolic and bariatric surgery – laparoscopic procedures for obesity, surgeries for obesity associated with metabolic syndrome—diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and high blood lipid and cholesterol levels (approximately 150 surgeries per year)
  • Gastrointestinal surgery (laparoscopic and open)
  • Stomach surgery for peptic ulcers, benign and malignant tumors (cancer, GIST, NET), hiatal hernia, and reflux
  • Small bowel surgery for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), adhesions, polyps, and diverticula
  • Colon surgery for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diverticular disease, polyps, and colorectal cancer
  • Approximately 100 surgeries per year—both laparoscopic (75%) and open (25%)
  • Proctology – hemorrhoids, rectovaginal prolapse, anal fissures, fistulas, and abscesses – approximately 300 surgeries per year, both conventional and minimally invasive (using the Long method)
  • Treatment of chronic and complicated wounds —diabetic foot syndrome, leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, radiation ulcers, etc.—using conservative methods such as moist wound healing as well as surgical procedures involving plastic surgery (approximately 50 surgeries per year)
  • Urology – varicoceles, hydroceles, phimosis, sterilization for self-paying patients, early-stage bladder cancer, minimally invasive and open surgeries for benign prostatic hyperplasia, kidney surgeries (approximately 100 surgeries per year)

In the aforementioned segments of elective care, the Department of Surgery is classified as a “high-volume” facility, where the concentration of procedures statistically leads to better outcomes with fewer complications.

Generally, surgeries are performed either using the traditional open approach (via an incision) or via minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques, using small 5–12 mm incisions, depending on the type of diagnosis and the extent of the condition. Minimally invasive methods result in less pain for patients, a lower surgical burden, and faster discharge with a shorter recovery period. However, they require more specialized equipment in the operating room. Minimally invasive surgery is not always suitable for every patient. Your doctor at the specialist clinic will provide information on whether a minimally invasive or open approach is appropriate for your planned surgery when you schedule the procedure, or the department head may provide this information.

Same-day surgery

Certain procedures (such as surgery for benign tumors, hernias, hemorrhoids, gallbladder conditions, and appendicitis) can be performed on an outpatient basis (admission in the morning on the day of surgery and discharge that same evening, or by the following morning at the latest).

Standard hospitalization

Conversely, for more complex and demanding surgeries requiring a longer hospital stay, monitored beds and 24-hour availability of the anesthesia and resuscitation team are provided. The department has 8 beds in the multidisciplinary intensive care unit, where patients are admitted following major surgical procedures.

This arrangement ensures safe and high-quality postoperative care, while preserving the family-like atmosphere of the ward and the entire hospital, which is another of our key strengths.

Surgeries are performed in two operating rooms that have recently undergone a complete renovation and modernization and are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including two new laparoscopic towers.

Ordering hours

Another advantage of our department is our flexible scheduling for surgery, with wait times of no more than two to three weeks (depending on the diagnosis). Patients have the option of reserving a premium private room when they schedule their surgery.

Expertise

The doctors in our department present their experiences at professional conferences and publish articles in both academic and popular journals. Our department hosts teaching sessions and professional internships for medical students and high school students pursuing a career in healthcare.

Deluxe Rooms

The surgical ward has six deluxe rooms equipped with a TV, refrigerator, electric kettle, and Wi-Fi. Each room has its own bathroom (toilet and shower).

You can reserve a deluxe room either when you schedule your surgery at the specialist clinic or later by phone or email on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughthedepartment’sadministrative office.

However, we recommend that you always discuss this option with your doctor beforehand.

The department reserves the right to change the occupancy of premium rooms or cancel reservations due to capacity constraints or other serious reasons.
Photos of the deluxe room are for informational purposes only; specific rooms cannot be requested.
